It’s difficult for most of us to give up control but this is one thing you must do when you are facing a diagnosis of cancer and impending treatment. Your physicians will take control of your treatment; telling you when you need lab work, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and follow-up tests. This can be a good thing because you can focus on other aspects of your life where you do have control.

As soon as family and friends know that you have cancer, you will be hearing, “What can I do to help?” Don’t turn them away. They truly want to help you and your family. Instead, take control and let people help. Give them suggestions of how they can help, so you don’t end up with five pans of lasagna (which your kids won’t eat), three pans of tuna casserole (which you won’t eat) or two cars showing up at the same time to pick up your kids for soccer practice!

Determine what help you do need or want. Some ideas are picking up your children from school or after-school activities, helping with rides to the doctor, doing laundry, mowing the lawn, taking you out for a ride and talking or just keeping you company when you are having a down day. If you want help with meals, make suggestions about what sounds good or what your family will eat. If you would prefer, you can suggest a gift card from a restaurant, so your spouse can pick something up when you don’t feel like making a meal. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help. Not only are your friends and family giving you a gift of their time and help, but you are giving them a gift by allowing them to help you!

If you want to send thank-you notes, here are a few ideas:

1) Ask each person who helps you out to address an envelope with their name and address. This will allow you to send a note and not have the issue of finding their address.

2) Ask your spouse or kids to help write the thank you notes. Even small children can draw a picture and you can write thank you.

3) Allow a friend to help out with the thank you notes.

You and your family are in control of visits. Ask family and friends to check before they visit. You may be experiencing extreme tiredness and all you want to do is rest. It’s okay for you or your spouse to say, “Today isn’t a good day, but check with us tomorrow.” Again, they truly want to be there for you, so allow them to visit – but on your terms.

At Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center, we offer both radiation and medical oncology. This makes it easier for our patients to get the services they need by having a complete team dedicated to their care. We start with information and education for our patients and their families. Because each cancer is unique, we personalize each treatment plan using the best available options. We then provide our patients with detailed information about their plan. They will learn what to expect during their treatment, common side effects and how to obtain support resources.

The Research staff are focused on offering our patients the newest and best clinical trials available. By working with both the Nebraska Cancer Research Center and pharmaceutical companies; our Clinic can offer clinical trials through national study groups like National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project and Southwest Oncology Project as well as the latest pharma trials. They will also research the availability of other studies if requested by a patient.

Our Radiology Department provides positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) scans performed by experienced, qualified technicians. The staff are both professional and compassionate. Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center is proud of the fact that we had the first fixed PET/CT scanner in Lincoln.

“I enjoy working at SNCC because of the compassionate care that our patients receive from the staff. There is a bond that forms with our patients and their families. A trust is built because of the care our physicians give and that gives families peace of mind.”
— Sheila, Research Secretary

“I think the most enjoyable part about working at SNCC is the patients we get to serve; they are such a special group of people. We are fortunate as staff to have the opportunity to build a relationship with the patient and their family no matter what our role at SNCC.”

The Clinic Area is staffed by licensed practical nurses (LPN) and certified medical assistants (CMA). When you are seen by a physician or midlevel; a clinic nurse will greet you, take you to an exam room and talk with you about your history, medications and symptoms. They also work with your insurance company to receive any pre-authorizations you might need. Their smiles and caring, competent manner will comfort you during your visit.

“Cancer patients are unlike any other patients that I have come in-contact with in the medical profession—they have a whole new look at life. I find them amazing! They appreciate everything in life even more. It is amazing, because when people hear that I work here their automatic response is to get the sad face and “oh, that must be so sad” and in reality it isn’t. Our patients are grateful and thankful for EVERYTHING. Coming to work and seeing them daily helps me remember what is important in life. They know that everyday is truly a gift—each sunrise/ sunset, every birthday, they know how important it is forgive, to love, and to remember the good things and never sweat the small things.

I feel fortunate to work here because it is the kind of atmosphere where I go home everyday knowing that I made a difference at work. I get to help my patients in several ways—whether it be calling their insurance to complete a prior authorization, so they can get their Rx; helping a patient get to their car; or just a hug when they have had a bad day! I know that what I did for that day was important!”
— Laura, LPN, Clinic Nurse Team Leader

“I feel very fortunate to work at SNCC. Patients come here at a very emotional time and we get to be a part of making a difference in their lives. We really get to know the patients and a lot of times they become like family. Knowing that what I do or say can make all the difference in their day makes me want to do what I can to provide them with a great experience every time they come here.

We have a great group of people here to work with. We have such a great amount of teamwork throughout the entire SNCC family. We all rely on each other to make sure our jobs are done efficiently and I know that if I ever needed anything outside of work, I could count on any one here to help.”
— Kendra, CMA

“We develop a very close relationship with our patients. It’s more than just cancer care. You get to know the whole person. Patients also develop these types of relationships with each other. They may only have one thing in common, that being cancer, but they acquire life-long friendships. The patients are always so grateful for what we do for them. To us it’s all in a day’s work, but to them, it means the world. I am grateful that I am allowed to share their journey.”
— Chris, CMA

“I truly feel blessed work with everyone here, and to see that it isn’t just a job to come to, but everyone truly cares about each other. We go above and beyond to make our patients feel comfortable.”
— Cindy, CMA

“When disease strikes it totally changes everything in a person’s life. The financial stress is often the “unspoken” stress in an illness that impacts the wellbeing of our patients. SNCC has an amazing group of people in our business office who work as a team, putting their heart and soul into helping alleviate this stress as much as possible.”
— Melanie, Coding Specialist

“Our goal is for our patients to concentrate on their treatment and we will concentrate on any insurance issues that may arise. We always want to treat our patients with respect and with the same caring nature that we would treat our family.”
