At Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center, we take pride providing leading cancer care to the patients who walk through our doors. We devote ourselves to making patients and their families feel comfortable in our warm and inviting environment. Please hear for yourself what our patients say about Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center. Their words speak louder than anything we can say.
Information For Our Patients
Most patients come to us on referral by their physician. The first step in your care is education about cancer treatment. Everyone receives a new patient packet on their first visit. For your convenience, here are brochures that describe our capabilities and the practices that we emphasize at our center. Feel free to download the information to the right for your reference.
The Pharmacy staff is here to fill your prescriptions and refills as efficiently as possible. Our pharmacist will also explain the benefits and side effects of each prescription as well as answering any questions you might have. Please give at least 24 hours notice when requesting a refill. This will enable the Pharmacy to have the drug available and ready when you arrive.
At Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center, we believe patient care goes beyond medical science, which is why we offer extended services like complimentary massages to our patients. Every Thursday at our Pine Lake location, a licensed massage therapist is available for patients who wish to receive a refreshing 10-minute back massage.
Hearing the diagnosis of cancer can be devastating. It brings many thoughts, feelings and fears swirling in your head and heart. Each patient deals differently with these concerns. Some people use exercise, talking with friends and family, attending church, and/or joining a support group as a way to cope. If you are having difficulty coping with your diagnosis or treatment, share your concerns with your physician. You may benefit from talking with a counselor.
Nursing
Our oncology nurses are an important part of your healthcare team. They have received specialized training and are knowledgeable regarding treatment regimens and side effects. They are proficient in chemotherapy preparation and administration. Many of our infusion nurses have their Oncology Nursing Certification (OCN). Oncology nurses are aware of the needs and fears of both the patient and family and are comfortable discussing all aspects of care. Please never hesitate to ask a question or express a concern. They want to put their experience to work for your benefit.
Laboratory
Clinical Laboratory testing plays a critical role in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of many diseases, including cancer. Laboratory Technologists perform most of these tests, many in our office. They examine and analyze blood and other body fluids utilizing state of the art equipment to provide a vast volume of information to enable your physician to prescribe the appropriate treatments and/or preventive measures to ensure the best therapy for you.
We offer access to one of the latest cancer detection technologies – circulating tumor cell (CTC) machine. The CTC test uses sensitive technology to detect metastatic cancer cells in a blood sample. The CTC machine was originally offered to patients enrolled in clinical research trials. It is now available to patients with metastatic breast, colon and prostate cancer. In cancer, metastatic cells break away from a tumor and are carried in blood to grow in other parts of the body. The CTC machine uses tiny iron particles joined to antibodies that attach specifically to cancer cells in blood. Magnets then draw the cancer cells out of the blood sample so they can be measured, allowing physicians to determine if the cancer is responding to treatment. SNCC was the first healthcare facility in Nebraska to install a CTC machine.
Radiology
At Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center we are pleased to be able to offer in-house CT and PET scan services. Radiology procedures are used in cancer treatment to aid your physician in staging, diagnosis and evaluation of treatment effectiveness. We are pleased to have Matt Bideaux, Director of Radiology, who with his many years of radiology experience will do everything he can to make you comfortable.
Many organizations support patient advocacy and cancer research. These groups provide a vital service to cancer patients and their families, providing advice, community resources and help in coping with a cancer diagnosis. Many also contribute to cancer research locally and nationally.
Joining a cancer support group can provide a source of strength for patients and families.
SNCC actively supports many of these groups, both financially and through voluntary activities of our physicians and staff.
The Southeast Nebraska Cancer Foundation was set up to assist all patients in Lincoln and Southeast Nebraska. Foundation funding is received from donations, memorials and Football 101. Individuals can request funds to assist them with transportation costs and/or lodging.
It is always best to anticipate your prescription refill needs so you can have them written during a scheduled office visit. If you are calling for a refill, we would like to have 24 hours notice. When calling in your refill request, please give your name, phone number, the drug you need refilled, your pharmacy name and their phone number.
By law you must have written prescriptions for narcotics, such as Percocet, MS Contin, Oxycontin, or Duragesic. We prefer that you pick up these prescriptions in person at our office. No narcotic pain prescriptions can be made after office hours or on the weekends.
Here at Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center, one of our goals is to help with your communication during and after your treatment. It is natural to feel overwhelmed with so many people in your life wanting to know, “How are you?”, “When is your next treatment?” or “Is there something I can do for you?”. There may be times when talking about your treatment is more difficult than others, or you may just want to pour out your emotions to yourself without ever sharing with anyone else. As individuals, we all process our thoughts in our own way.
In hopes of helping you, we have partnered with CaringBridge, a charitable organization devoted to offering free websites to people experiencing significant health issues. CaringBridge is a great way to help you share your thoughts, emotions and whatever you may be feeling with your family and friends. But if sharing is not the stage you are at right now, this journal can help you document your personal journey and will be there for you should you chose to share with others. You can add updates or photos as often as you choose, and you may share your website url with anyone you like – or no one. Visitors to your website can leave comments and words of encouragement if they like. A website is easy to create and extremely user friendly.

Having the support of others while going through cancer treatment can be important to the healing process. Naturally, most patients first turn to their family and friends for encouragement and emotional support. But something quite valuable can be gained by participating in a group with people who are undergoing a similar situation. Many patients have found great strength and encouragement through support groups.
A mutual support group can make a significant contribution in restoring a sense of well-being. When the group networks with a caring medical team, the patient and his/her family can more readily move toward recovery despite any limitations of cancer.
To find a support group that matches your needs, visit with our staff or our Patient Advocate. Additional resources are listed to the right.

Look Good Feel Better is a program sponsored by the Personal Care Products Council Foundation, American Cancer Society and the Professional Beauty Association/National Cosmetology Association. The program teaches women diagnosed with cancer about beauty techniques to manage the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment.
Local cosmetologists volunteer their time to instruct women about make-up, skin care and wig care. Each class is free and participants receive free cosmetics.

I Can Cope is a free educational program for adults facing cancer. Classes are also open to family members and friends.
